As I Like It
If I were to direct the play As You Like It, by William Shakespeare, this is what I would do.
The play would be set in medieval times. When I think of dukes, disowning family, and running away to the forest, that is the time I see that happening. Mostly I see my own time, but the medieval ages are close enough; plus, they have wizards!
The costumes would be lighter pastel colors when they’re in town and the royals would have purple incorporated into their outfits. The patterns would be dresses for the ladies and knights, like clothes for the men. Now when they move to the forest outfits, that kind of changes the dynamics. Since they’re hiding, their clothes should help them blend in. That would mean browns, greens, and grays. The patterns would be a simple shirt, legging; like pants, and simple leather boots. I would also incorporate a belt for them to carry pouches and weapons on. Also, all of them have to have a cloak, because why not?
The actors would be top notch, as would the play. They would match what the character should look like and act like. Now, top notch doesn’t mean they’re perfect, because who is, but I wouldn’t have an entire class of total rookies.
The set would be amazing just like everything else. There would be climbable trees, real animals, and plants. The backdrop would look so realistic; the audience should feel like they could reach out and touch it. The only time there would be music would be when there were action scenes.
Overall, my play would be great and amazing. The costumes and set would bring the play to life, and my actors would be on point. This is how I would direct the play As You Like It, by William Shakespeare. Close scene.
